The Middle Fork Clearwater Wild and Scenic River and the Lochsa River define the northern portion of this Idaho landscape, where protected forest lands meet steep mountain terrain. This territory is largely divided between the Clearwater National Forest and the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, preserving a network of drainage systems such as Huckleberry Creek, Old Man Creek, and Boulder Creek.
