The Snake River anchors this landscape south of Idaho Falls, where a complex network of irrigation and hydroelectric infrastructure supports the region's agricultural and industrial base. Controlled by the Middle Idaho Falls Dam and Lower Idaho Falls Dam, the river's flow is diverted into an extensive system of canals and laterals, including the Porter Canal, Highland Canal, and the Snake River Valley Canal. These waterways define the rural character between the urban grid of Idaho Falls and the smaller settlements of Cotton, Taylorville, and Shelley.
