Uncompahgre National Forest spans the southern portion of this high-elevation landscape, where the plateaus of Piñon Mesa drop into a complex system of drainages. The area is defined by dramatic geological incisions, most notably the wide Unaweep Canyon in the north and the deep Big Dominguez Canyon to the south. These landforms create a distinct vertical topography that has historically dictated movement through the region, funneling travel along established routes like Divide Rd and Creek Canyon Rd.
