Johnson Canyon and the surrounding high plains of Las Animas County are defined by a complex network of erosional features and seasonal waterways. The Purgatoire River cuts through the northwest corner, creating the steep Purgatoire Canyon and receiving drainage from Lockwood Arroyo. This landscape is sparsely settled, with the small Johnson Cem serving as a significant genealogical marker for local families.
