The rolling agricultural uplands of Iowa County are deeply dissected by the intricate drainage systems of Dodge Branch, Simmons Branch, and Lynch Branch. In the early 1960s, this landscape is defined by the heavy presence of the Chicago and North Western railroad, which snakes through the northern hills near Dodgeville and the southern valley at Jonesdale. A remnant of earlier transit persists as an Old Grade following the southern watercourses.

Local history is preserved in the scattered rural institutions that serve the farming community, including Simpson Chapel and the Hollyhead Sch. Several burial sites, such as Garrison Grove Cem and St Bridgets Cem, anchor the genealogy of the area. The map illustrates a period when the infrastructure of the driftless area—from small-scale quarries to the local Roadside Park—was firmly established around the rail lines and winding country roads.
