Volcanic activity from the mid-20th century dominates this coastal landscape on the Island of Hawai'i. Massive swaths of the Honokua Lava Flow of 1950 and the Ka'apuna Lava Flow of 1950 descend from the upland slopes to the Pacific Ocean, permanently altering the shoreline and covering previous terrain. Along the water's edge, the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail threads through a series of rocky landmarks and points, including Pali Kaholo and Kauluoa Point.
