Central to the region is the Pohakuloa Training Area, which spans a significant portion of the terrain north of the Ke'āmuku Lava Flow. Numerous cinder cones, or pu'u, punctuate the landscape, including Pu'ukoghekili, Pu'uke'eke'e, and Pu'ukapele.
