The University of Rhode Island anchors the northeastern portion of this coastal Rhode Island landscape, where the academic hub of Kingston transitions into a complex system of wetlands and coastal ponds. The Great Swamp State Management Area dominates the central terrain, a vast interior wetland drained by the Chipuxet River and the Pawcatuck River. To the south, the environment shifts toward the Atlantic, defined by the extensive waters of Worden Pond and the protected habitats of the Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge.
