Volcanic activity defines the high-altitude landscape of this mid-century survey, where the slopes of Mauna Loa Forest and Game Reserve are marked by a chronology of eruptions. The map serves as a geological record of the island's evolving surface, tracing the exact paths of the Lava Flow of 1843, the Lava Flow of 1935, and the more recent Lava Flow of 1942. These frozen rivers of stone cross complex district boundaries between Hamakua, North Hilo, and Kau.

Remote outposts and geographic markers are scattered throughout the high elevations, including a Weather Station and high-altitude landmarks like Pohaku Hanalei and Lua Ioane.
