About this map

Lava Flow of 1852 and the Lava Flow of 1942 scar the high slopes of the Island of Hawai‘i, illustrating the active volcanic history of this upland region. The landscape is dominated by cinder cones and volcanic peaks including Kulani, Volcano, and Pū‘ulala‘au. Human infrastructure is sparse, defined primarily by the Stainback Hwy and the winding Puu Oo Horse Trl, which navigate the elevation changes. To the southeast, the protected expanse of the Hawai‘i Volcanoes Wilderness preserves the primary geological character of the terrain. Notable water sources in this dry, porous environment are rare, with Solomons Waterhole serving as a significant named landmark. This survey provides a contemporary perspective on the ever-changing volcanic topography near Na Lua Māhoe.
