Kūlani Correctional Facility and its associated infrastructure dominate this high-elevation landscape on the eastern slopes of Mauna Loa. The terrain is defined by successive volcanic events, featuring the Lava Flow of 1852, Lava Flow of 1881, and more recent Lava Flow of 1942. These flows weave through established forest reserves and the Kīpuka ‘Āinahou Nēnē Sanctuary, creating a complex mosaic of raw volcanic rock and native vegetation.
