The southern waters of Lake Superior define the geography of Baraga County, where the deep indentations of Keweenaw Bay and L'Anse Bay create a jagged coastline of points and protected harbors. The village of L'Anse serves as a focal point at the base of the bay, anchored by the Baraga County Courthouse and the Keeweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College. Across the water, the village of Baraga and the settlement of Assinins line the western shore, while the eastern peninsula stretches out to Pequaming and its prominent Pequaming Point. The interior landscape rises toward Pikes Peak, drained by watercourses like the Falls River and Little Silver Cr. This coastal network reflects a long history of maritime and community life, preserved through sites like the Assinins Cem and the Baraga Village Cem.
