Lake Cataouatche and Lake Salvador dominate this coastal landscape, separated by the low-lying terrain of Couba Island. During the mid-1960s, this area of the Mississippi River Delta was defined by a complex network of man-made waterways and petroleum infrastructure. Numerous drill holes dot the marshes, supported by specialized channels like the Bayou Couba Oil Field Canal and activities at the Bayou Villars Oil Field.
