1990 Map of Lake City East

About this map

Lake City and the surrounding coastal plain of the South Carolina Lowcountry are defined by a complex network of wetlands and drainage systems in the late 20th century. The landscape is dominated by the sprawling reaches of Lake Swamp, which meanders through the center of the sheet, joined by various tributaries including Singleton Swamp and Smith Swamp. This network of slow-moving water and seasonal drainage channels dictated the settlement patterns, forcing agriculture and infrastructure onto the slightly higher ground between the swamp margins.
