1919 Map of Lake Memphremagog

About this map

The International Boundary defines the northern edge of this Vermont landscape, where the waters of Lake Memphremagog and Willoughby Lake anchor the region's geography. Compiled by Col. Francis R. Shunk for the Corps of Engineers, this military survey details a late-era industrial and agricultural corridor at the onset of the 1920s. A dense network of crossroads settlements like Darling Corner and Kingsbury Cor. reveals a highly localized rural economy, while the Boston & Maine R.R. and Canadian Pacific R.R. connect the population centers of Newport and West Derby. The map traces the winding courses of the Clyde River and Barton River, which powered the development of Brownington Village and West Charleston. This sheet captures the region just as traditional road networks like Dutton Road were beginning to integrate with modern rail infrastructure.
