Lake San Cristobal dominates this portion of Hinsdale County, its waters held back by the massive Slumgullion Earthflow and Slumgullion Slide to the northeast. This geological activity created one of the state's largest natural lakes, which is fed by the Lake Fork and Slumgullion Creek. The landscape transition is evident where the Gunnison National Forest meets the Rio Grande National Forest along the high ridges of the Continental Divide.
