Kaena Heiau stands near the northwestern edge of Lāna‘i, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Kalohi Channel. This 2013 survey reveals a landscape of deep gulches and coastal features, where the arid north shore is defined by drainages like Puumaiakahi Gulch and Lapaiki Gulch. Inland, the distinctive geological formation known as the Garden of the Gods serves as a central landmark, situated near the headwaters of numerous ephemeral streams that carve paths toward the sea.
