Saint Mathias sits at the western edge of this central Minnesota landscape, where the Nokasippi River and the Little Nokasippi River meander through a glacial terrain defined by numerous lakes and wetlands. The area is characterized by a dense network of water bodies, including Fuchs Lake, Ashenbrenner Lake, and the expansive Black Brook Swamp to the southeast. Settlers and descendants can find two significant local landmarks: Riverside Cem near the riverbanks and Hagen-Arnestad Cem to the north near Hay Cr.
