The high ridges of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains dominate this 2013 survey of Taos County, where the alpine wilderness of the Carson National Forest meets the recreational grounds of the Rio Costilla Ski Area. The terrain is defined by massive peaks exceeding 12,000 feet, including Latir Peak, Virsylvia Peak, and Venado Peak, which form a natural wall across the landscape. Between these summits, a network of high-altitude glacial lakes and streams, such as S Latir Lake, Heart Lake, and Bear Lake, provide the headwaters for Latir Cr and Cabresto Cr.
