Lake Mead and its deeply indented shoreline define the western edge of this desert landscape within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The terrain transitions from the water at Virgin Basin and Quail Bay into the high elevations of the South Virgin Mountains to the east. Seasonal drainage systems such as Lime Wash, Quail Springs Wash, and Catclaw Wash cut through the arid terrain, illustrating the complex hydrology of the Mojave Desert.
