Craters of the Moon National Preserve and the adjacent Craters of the Moon National Monument dominate this southern Idaho landscape, where the administrative boundary between Blaine and Butte counties cuts through a series of townships and ranges. The terrain is characterized by the unique geological features of the Snake River Plain, including Carey Kipuka, an island of older land surrounded by younger lava flows.
