Velasquez Plaza and the small settlement of Sarcillo anchor the northern edge of this high-plateau landscape in Las Animas County. The terrain is defined by a dense network of drainages carving through the Park Plateau, including the deeply incised Little Pine Canyon and Alamosa Canyon. The northern reaches are shaped by the Purgatoire River as it flows through the Picketwire Valley, joined by the S Fork Purgatoire River near the Ute Hills.
