Velasquez Plaza sits near the northern edge of this landscape, positioned along the Purgatoire River within the Wyoming Valley. This area in Las Animas County is characterized by a dense network of canyons, including Lorencito Canyon and Alamosa Canyon, which carve through the Beaubien and Miranda (Maxwell) land grant. Evidence of earlier industrial activity remains visible through the Old RR Grade and the Quinto Mine located in the northwest, near the Ute Hills.

The complex drainage system is defined by features such as the Right Hand Fork and Left Hand Fork of Martinez Canyon. Cultural and agricultural development is marked by an Aqueduct near the river, supporting the small settlements and homesteads found in the canyon bottoms. Numerous tracks, such as the Jeep Trail, provide the primary means of navigating the high terrain between Little Pine Canyon and Chimney Canyon.
