Little River and North Myrtle Beach anchor this coastal survey where the South Carolina and North Carolina border meets the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape is a complex network of tidal marshes and shifting barrier islands, including Waties Island and Bird Island, separated by the Little River Inlet. To the north, the Intracoastal Waterway cuts through the marshland near Sunset Beach, bypassing the winding natural channels of the Little River itself.
