Lykens and Wiconisco occupy the narrow valley between Short Mountain and Berry Mountain in northern Dauphin County. This area reflects a deep community history, particularly evident in the concentration of denominational and fraternal burial grounds such as the German Catholic Cem, Irish Catholic Cem, and the Odd Fellows Cem. These sites, along with the Patriotic Order Sons of America Cem, speak to the distinct immigrant and social groups that settled the region to work the coal seams of the neighboring ridges. The transition from industrial infrastructure to modern recreation is marked by the Lykens Valley Rail Trl, which follows the corridor of Wiconisco Creek. To the south, the landscape shifts to the uninhabited, high-elevation terrain of Broad Mountain and Peters Mountain, where the Haldeman & Greenland Tracts - Snowmobile Trails Trl weaves through headwater streams like Rattling Creek.
