Booneville sits at the heart of this 1880s survey, surrounded by a complex system of east-west ridges and creek valleys within the Arkansas Ozarks. This work, primarily conducted by the Geological Survey of Arkansas, documents the early development of Logan County when settlements like Chismville, Golden City, and Magazine were connected by primitive roads following natural drainages.

The landscape is dominated by high points such as White Oak Mt., Huckleberry Mt., and the curiously named Hole In The Ground Mt.. A dense network of waterways including Sugar Creek, Six Mile Creek, and Revilee Cr. carved the topography into distinct sections like Six Mile or Booneville Ridge. These water sources were vital for the early agrarian communities and small outposts such as Sugar Grove and Driggs shown at their nineteenth-century scale.
