Mahoney Hill and the surrounding high-country plateaus of Cascade County are defined by a complex drainage system feeding into the Missouri River basin. The terrain is characterized by prominent topographical elevations like Blankenbaker Hill and Forest Hill, alongside distinctive flat-topped features such as Dutch Bench and Swede Bench. These elevated benches provided stable ground for early ranching and agricultural efforts in an area otherwise dissected by numerous waterways, including Sand Coulee Cr and its various branches.
