About this map

The upland slopes of the Island of Hawai‘i are characterized by a network of drainage channels and volcanic landmarks north of the Mauna Kea summit. Small ranching or utility outposts like Makahalau and Kemole are connected by a grid of specialized access roads, including Makahalau Alanui and Pa‘akainui Alanui, which cut across the high-elevation terrain. In the northwest corner, the larger settlement of Waimea sits at a junction of roads such as Mealani Rd and Kittaina Alanui.
