The community of Malta sits near the northern boundary of this Northeast Texas landscape, where the flatlands of Little Prairie meet a dense network of creek drainages. Just to the west, the outskirts of De Kalb mark the edge of a region defined by its rural road system, including FM 1840 and FM 990. The area is heavily dissected by seasonal watercourses such as Anderson Cr and Red Bayou, which carve through the terrain and create a complex pattern of woodlots and open pastures.
