The Tobacco Root Mountains dominate this high-altitude landscape in the southern reaches of the Deerlodge National Forest. This 2017 survey details a region defined by steep drainages and alpine lakes, centered on the small settlement of Mammoth. The terrain is deeply carved by the S Boulder River and its numerous tributaries, including Cataract Cr and Curly Cr, which flow from high-elevation basins such as those holding Rock Cr Lake and Curly Lake.
