John Swallow Grave stands as a solitary historical marker within the high backcountry of the Willamette National Forest. This high-altitude landscape is defined by the volcanic topography of the Cascade Range, where North Cinder Peak and South Cinder Peak loom over a dense network of glacial lakes and alpine basins. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trl traverses the crest of the range, following the border between Linn and Jefferson counties.
