Big Bend National Park defines the northern reaches of this remote borderland, where the Rio Grande carves a deep path through the desert landscape. The terrain is dominated by the dramatic ascent of Mariscal Mountain and the steep limestone walls of Mariscal Canyon, which marks a sharp southern bend in the international boundary between the United States of America and Estados Unidos Mexicanos. Within this protected wilderness, the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River corridor preserves a primitive environment largely free of modern development.
