The United States of America and Mexico border is defined by the winding course of the Rio Grande through this remote stretch of Brewster County. Much of the northern portion of the map is protected within Big Bend National Park, where the landscape is dominated by the steep elevations of Mariscal Mtn and the sheer drops of the Mariscal Rim. The river corridor itself is designated as the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River, reflecting its preserved state.
