The Modoc National Forest landscape across this quadrangle is defined by a complex network of man-made water management and unique natural preservation. The western portion is anchored by the Devils Garden Natural Area, a distinct basaltic plateau environment. Scattered across the high country are numerous impoundments including Green Spring Reservoir, Green Tank Reservoir, and the large Crowder Mountain Reservoir. These features, alongside smaller catchments like Lakeshore Reservoir and Rimrock Valley Reservoir, illustrate a concerted effort to manage water resources in this arid upland terrain. On the eastern edge, the topography drops sharply toward the X L Ranch Indian Reservation, where the terrain transitions into the namesake McGinty Reservoir. Named landmarks such as Beaver Mountain and Crowder Mountain provide vertical relief in an area largely characterized by vast flats and volcanic rimrock valleys, while markers like Whittemore Ranch hint at the area's grazing history.
