McIntosh Mountain dominates the high elevation landscape of this Gunnison County region, where the alpine terrain is carved by a dense network of gulches and creeks. Much of the northern and central areas are contained within the Gunnison National Forest, featuring landmarks like Sun Park and several backcountry routes including the April Gulch Trail and the Black Gulch Trail. These paths trace the natural drainage patterns of the high country before the land descends toward the river valley in the south.
