The Muskegon River meanders through a vast expanse of wetland and forest along the border of Missaukee and Roscommon counties. This 2017 survey documents a landscape defined by water and recreational space, where the Dead Stream Swamp and Heidemann Marsh dominate the central terrain. While much of the area remains undeveloped, seasonal and residential clusters are established along the shores of Higgins Lake and N Bay Houghton Lake, including the communities of Lyon Manor and Hillcrest. Local heritage is anchored at Heidemann Cem and Oakwood Cem, while the historic site of Michelson sits in the southwestern corner near the confluence of Haymarsh Cr and the river. The presence of the Snowmobile Trl highlights the modern role of these marshes as a hub for outdoor recreation and conservation.
