Miami sits at the base of the high mesa country in northeastern New Mexico, where the plains meet the southern edge of the Sangre de Cristo foothills. The landscape is dominated by the massive landforms of Rayado Mesa and Gonzalitos Mesa, separated by the distinct break of Horse Thief Gap. This area is defined by its drainage systems, with Rayado Cr and Salado Cr carving through the terrain towards the lower ranchlands.
