1973 Map of Middle Butte

USGS Topo · Published 1976

About this map

The volcanic landscape of the Eastern Snake River Plain is defined here by Twin Buttes, prominent landmarks that rise sharply above the high desert. This 1970s survey captures a transition in the region's utility, showing the area within the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory boundary. While much of the terrain is marked as Restricted, the map records numerous subterranean features including Middle Butte Cave and the intriguingly named Moonshiners Cave near the eastern margin. Below the prominent heights of Middle Butte and East Butte, the land levels out into the expanse of Tilden Flat. A network of unpaved Jeep Trails and unnamed Trails provides the only access through this desolate expanse, reflecting a period when the area was primarily used for specialized government research and limited resource extraction, such as the small Borrow Pit in the south.
