The East Hinson Indian Mounds stand as a focal point of cultural history within the vast, water-logged expanses of Collier County. This 2024 landscape is primarily defined by the transition between the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge and the Big Cypress National Preserve, where wet prairies and strands create a complex mosaic of subtropical wetlands. The tiny settlement of Miles City sits near the junction of several drainage features, including the Miles City Prairie and Fire Prairie. Elevated terrain such as Bear Island, Hog Island, and Platt Island provides rare dry ground amidst the sprawling Okaloacoochee Slough and East Hinson Marsh. Traces of human passage and land management are visible through a network of tracks like the Bear Island Grade Trl and Pirocchi Grade Trl, which navigate the cypress strands and hammocks.
