Montauk Point serves as the easternmost extremity of Long Island, where the land finally yields to the Atlantic Ocean. This maritime landscape is defined as much by its underwater topography as its rocky shores, with several hazardous features offshore including Endeavor Shoals, Phelps Ledge, and Great Eastern Rock. These names signify a long history of navigation and the inherent risks of the coastal waters surrounding the point. On land, the settlement of Montauk is reached via the Montauk Pkwy and the historic Old Montauk Hwy, which wind past False Point and the small freshwater basin of Money Pond. The map illustrates the terminal point of New York’s coastal infrastructure before the vast expanse of the open sea begins at Montauk Shoal.
