Roundtop Work Center serves as a remote hub within the extensive backcountry of the St Joe National Forest, a region defined by high peaks and high-elevation meadows. The landscape is dominated by the dramatic Monumental Buttes chain, stretching from North Butte through South Butte and East Butte. This mid-1990s record of Shoshone County topography illustrates a complex watershed where the North Fork and East Fork contribute to the Clearwater River system. High-altitude water bodies such as Steamboat Lake and the aptly named Noseeum Lake are tucked into the basins below the ridges. The transition from national forest to the Floodwood State Forest at the southern boundary highlights the shift in land management during this era, while features like Spokane Meadows and Twin Creek Saddle indicate traditional transit points through the high country.
