The Red River drainage system dominates this portion of Idaho County, where a complex network of tributaries carves through the landscape. This 2011 survey shows the convergence of the West Fork Red River, Middle Fork Red River, and South Fork Red River, illustrating the hydrologic importance of this backcountry region. While primarily comprised of Forest Service lands, human presence is centered at the Little Ponderosa Ranch in the northeast and a series of National Forest Development Roads. Routes such as Nat For Dev Rd 1803 and the Jack Mtn Rd provide access across the high elevations. Local drainages like Moose Butte Creek, Hays Creek, and Moose Meadow Creek define the ridges and valleys, serving as essential landmarks for modern navigation and historical land management in the Nez Perce National Forest area.
