Avoca Island and the surrounding marshlands of Terrebonne Parish are defined by a complex network of natural waterways and industrial channels in this 2015 survey. The northern edge is dominated by the Intracoastal Waterway, a critical navigation route that intersects with Bayou Black and Bayou Chene. Moving south, the landscape transitions into a labyrinth of wetlands where Turtle Bayou and Bayou Penchant meander through the Public Land Survey System grids of Townships 17 and 18 South.
