About this map

Mt McKinley National Park encompasses a significant portion of this interior Alaskan landscape, which was mapped from aerial photography in the early 1950s. The region is defined by the massive braided channels of the Toklat River and the winding course of Stony Creek, which flow north from the high elevations near Divide Mtn and Mt Sheldon. The local economy of the era is represented by the Stampede Antimony Mine in the northwest, served by the adjacent Stampede Airstrip. Transportation is limited to the early Denali Highway and a scattered network of trails connecting the small settlement at Toklat. This survey documents the boundary between the protected wilderness and the mining interests that preceded the park's expansion, showing the exact placement of early survey markers like VABM 4271 Myrtle and VABM 4586 Tablet.
