The Animas River corridor defines the western edge of this landscape, where the small communities of Riverside and Cedar Hill sit alongside early water infrastructure like Twin Rock Ditch and Ralston Ditch. Moving east from the river valley, the terrain rises sharply into the Mesa Mountains and toward the summit of Mt Nebo. This high ground is deeply incised by a network of drainages, including Ditch Canyon and Sandstone Canyon, where numerous named springs like Cattail Spring and Shovel Spring provided vital water points in the high desert.
