Mount Sterling and Seneca occupy the high ground of Crawford County, positioned along the ridges that define the geography between the Mississippi and Kickapoo Rivers. The area is characterized by a series of prominent upland fingers including Mickelson Ridge, Boma Ridge, and Gunderson Ridge, which are separated by deep drainage hollows such as Peck Hollow and Caswell Hollow. This landscape of narrow plateaus and steep valleys dictated a settlement pattern where homes and cemeteries follow the ridgetop roads.

Local history is preserved in numerous rural burial grounds, including the Evergreen Cem south of Mount Sterling and Saint Patricks Cem near Seneca. The road network, featuring names like Rollercoaster Rd and Taylor Ridge Rd, reflects the winding nature of the topography. In the north, the small community of Fairview sits near the headwaters of Torgerson Hollow, while the eastern edge is marked by the descent into the Johnstown Valley.
