Mount Withington and the high ridges of the San Mateo Mountains dominate this rugged sector of the Cibola National Forest in Socorro County. The landscape is defined by a dense network of drainages, including Monica Canyon, Estaline Canyon, and Big Rosa Canyon, which illustrate the complex topography of the high desert. Evidence of ranching and early land use is scattered throughout the canyons, marked by features such as the Monica Cabin and Cooney Windmill.
