The San Mateo Mountains dominate this high-altitude landscape within the Cibola National Forest, centered on the namesake Mt Withington. This terrain is defined by its network of steep drainages, including Monica Canyon, Estaline Canyon, and Potato Canyon, which carve through the volcanic topography of the Withington Wilderness. Critical water sources for local livestock or wildlife are scattered throughout the draws, appearing as Monica Spring, Jones Spring, and specialized catchments like Boundary Tank and Road Tank.
