Beltrami Island State Forest defines this northern Minnesota landscape, where the boundary between Roseau and Beltrami counties meets the sprawling expanse of the Red Lake Indian Reservation. In the late 1960s, the terrain was characterized by its low-lying wetlands and complex water management systems, including County Ditch No 9 and County Ditch No 23, which intersect at the Reine township line.

Elevated features provide a distinct contrast to the surrounding marshes, most notably Bemis Hill, which served as a focal point for recreation with its Bemis Hill Campground and a dedicated Ski Slope. Remote access during this era relied heavily on a network of unpaved paths, such as the Jeep Trail winding through the timber. Small-scale industrial activity is evidenced by scattered Gravel Pit sites, while Mud Lake sits as a prominent landmark within the reservation's northeastern corner.
