The Wisconsin River dominates this landscape, weaving between several large islands and creating a complex network of backwaters and sloughs. Along its southern bank, the village of Muscoda serves as a hub where several county boundaries meet, including the junctions of Grant, Richland, and Iowa counties. The river valley is characterized by extensive wetlands such as Whites Slough and Big Cat Slough, while McClary Island and Muscoda Island divide the main channel.

Upland from the river, the terrain rises into prominent formations like Bomkamp Ridge and Dry Dog Ridge. Local history is preserved in several small burial grounds, including Pleasant Hill Cem and Dawson Cem located north of the river near the settlement of Orion. The southern portion of the area features Hickory Flat and the small locality of Day Rock, illustrating a rural landscape defined by narrow ridges and winding stream valleys like Blue River.
